SUBHEAD:
Who are Sharp HospiceCare’s spiritual care providers?

Sharp HospiceCare’s spiritual care providers are men and women professionally trained in theology and pastoral counseling and experienced in end-of-life spiritual care.

Consisting of ordained and lay ministers, the spiritual care providers are an integral part of the Sharp hospice team and work closely with the medical director, nurse, social worker, home health aide and bereavement counselor.

SUBHEAD:
What is the role of the spiritual care provider?

Spiritual care providers serve the spiritual needs of patients and family members. They work within all religious or spiritual belief systems and also assist those without religious preference. Spiritual care providers do not seek to further any particular religious agenda. They support others in making personal decisions regarding spiritual resources.

SUBHEAD:
What are some of the services that spiritual care providers offer?

Providers share conversation, prayer, meditation, pastoral counseling, music, religious rituals and other spiritual practices.

  • Spiritual support. If you wish, providers can arrange for someone from your faith to administer sacred rituals or meet any specific religious needs that might arise.

  • Emotional support. Spiritual care providers spend time talking with you about concerns or fears and listen as you explore your own spiritual beliefs and cope with your situation. As part of the larger hospice team, providers can direct you to other team resources, if needed.

  • Family support. Sharp HospiceCare spiritual care providers support patient family members and caregivers. They can also assist in planning and officiating at funeral and memorial services.

If you are thinking about some of the following questions, consider speaking with a Sharp spiritual care provider.

  • What did I do to deserve this?

  • Is my illness a punishment or judgment from God?

  • Is there someone who can help me explore my feelings and beliefs?

  • How do I cope with all the losses I have experienced?

  • I’ve had so much faith all my life -- why am I feeling afraid now?

  • I am no longer actively part of a faith community.  Who will do a memorial service for my family?

  • I wonder if there is any sort of life after death?

  • Where is God in this situation?

  • How do I deal with the guilt I feel?

  • How do I reconcile family estrangements and make peace in my family?

These are only some of the questions that might indicate you would like to spend time with a spiritual care provider -- all your concerns or feelings are important. Providers look to spend time with you in a way that you find most helpful.

SUBHEAD:
